What is color space?

The concept of color space depicts a mathematical model for the organization of different colors. With the help of color space models, it becomes possible to represent the colors reproducibility in analog as well as digital format. The color space can also be arbitrary with the presence of certain colors in a set of swatches that correspond to a name or number. Some of the commonly used color spaces include Pantone collection, NCS system, RGB system of adobe. The color spaces help in designing and developing of instruments that are able to measure the color of a surface and then represent it in mathematical or numerical form. There many different types of color spaces used by various color measurement instruments in different industries for the purpose of easy measuring of colors.

Generic color space

The generic color space refers to the color spaces that take reference from the external factors and in a generic color space the perpetual difference between colors is not related directly to the distance between the colors. Some of the major examples of generic color spaces include RGB, RGBA, CMYK.

Commercial color spaces

There are several versions of commercial color spaces that are developed for different industries to match the colors of different products and materials and ensure the best quality of colors. Some of the commercial color spaces used commercially include Munsell color system, Pantone matching System, Natural Color System.

Special Purpose Color Spaces

There are special purpose color spaces that are used in specific application such as RG chromaticity which is used for application of computer vision. This color space only gives information about the color of the light but not its intensity. Another color space TSL( Tint, Saturation, Luminance) are used for the purpose of face detection.

Absolute color space

An absolute color space can be defined as that color space in which there are unambiguous colors which mean that the colors can be interpreted in the space according to the principles of colorimetric measurements. In the measurement of colors in an absolute color space, there is no reference taken from the external factors.  Two major examples of absolute color space are CIEXYZ and sRGB.

Arbitrary Color Spaces

An arbitrary color space is the one, to which the consumers are more familiar involving the use of swatch cards. This type of color space is used for selection of fabrics, paints, etc. one of the most prominent examples of color spaces is the Pantone Matching System, which includes swatches and recipes that are used for creating different shades of colors.

Testronix is a manufacturer of high-end color measuring devices that are used in different industries. The instruments offered by Testronix use accurate color difference formulas to calculate the wide range of color spaces.
